92 report form comments for CBE teachers
Writing a fresh comment for forty learners in every learning area is one of the most tiring parts of the end of term. Below are 92 comments written for Kenyan classrooms, grouped by CBE performance level, by learning area, for values and behaviour, and for the class teacher and the principal. Use them as they are, or as a starting point for your own.
How to write a good report form comment
- Be specific. “Your compositions are well organised” helps more than “Good work”.
- Name one next step. Every comment should tell the learner and parent what to do next.
- Describe the work, not the child. Say “basic skills need more practice”, not “a weak learner”.
- Match the level. A comment should agree with the performance level on the same line.
- Keep it short. One or two sentences fit the space on a report form and get read.

Comments to avoid
- Labels such as “lazy”, “slow” or “weak” — they discourage and rarely change anything.
- Comparisons with other learners or siblings.
- Comments that don’t match the level, such as “excellent” next to AE2.
- The same comment for every learner in the class — parents compare report forms.
ShuleTop writes the class teacher’s and principal’s remarks on every report form automatically from each learner’s performance, so a whole class is ready to print at once. See CBE report forms →
